Review:

Recently I took my kids to a local amusement park geared toward children called Jungle Jim’s Playland. We had been in the past and I loved that my older boys could take my younger daughter on the rides while I watched. My kids very favorite ride is the roller coaster. It actually just goes around in a circle over and over again. Super fun, right? Yeah, not so much for me. I don’t even like to watch this ride. It makes my head feel a little woozy. But on this particular trip my 2 year old daughter REFUSED to go on the roller coaster without me. No amount of bribery or coaxing would change her mind. So, what was a mom to do? I got on the ride with her, of course.

I thought to myself, “I will totally be okay. This ride goes pretty slow. I’ll just focus on my cute girl and not the circles I’ll be traveling in.” BIG MISTAKE. It didn’t take long for me to feel the spinny circles going to my brain. After the ride was over I stumbled off, asked my friend Charity to keep an eye on my kiddos and made a beeline for the bathroom. I did not lose my lunch, but I really thought I was going to. I spent the rest of the trip with my head down on the table while my kids ran around with their besties and my friend checked on me every once in a while. Obviously not the best way to spend my time, eh?

Enter the Reliefband. If I’m being honest, I was VERY nervous to give this little watch-like device a try. I didn’t want a repeat of the roller coaster debacle. But, I did know that I wanted to be able to do those things with my kiddos again. So I slipped this little baby on and started spinning in circles. Seriously. I figured this would be the easiest way to try it out while still being in reach of my bed in case things went wrong.

After spinning for a minute or two (it really didn’t take long) I started to feel those familiar feelings: wooziness, vomity, you know the ones. So I flipped the watch on and waited. I felt nothing at first. A tiny little shock and a bit of tingling in my fingers. I decided to turn up the volume so to speak. Since the Reliefband has 5 settings I wanted to figure out what would work for me. I amped it to 3 and took a seat. The tiny shock got bigger, although still not uncomfortable. And my symptoms? They started to fade away.

I did a little happy dance right on the spot. I mean, I have dealt with motion sickness my entire life. (I even up-chucked my lunch on my family vacation in Hawaii when I was 11). Could this be real? Yes, yes it could! I knew I had to do a bit more experimenting before I embraced my giddiness. My next experiment? Reading while riding in the car. I made the hubs take me for a drive and I brought my book along. As soon as those uncomfortable feelings started to make themselves known I turned on the Reliefband. Again, it worked. And fast!

I am ridiculously excited about this thing. It is literally life changing. I am now free to do things I couldn’t before. I can go on that 3D ride without it ruining my entire vacation. I can take my daughter on the kiddie roller coaster and lose my lunch. I’m so ready to do more tests and to enjoy my life a little more. If you have ever suffered from motion sickness, morning sickness, or anything similar you should absolutely check this little baby out!

Pick up the Phone & Breathe Easy – All Clean has Got You Covered

Posted by on Dec 23, 2016

It was a VERY merry Christmas for my family as we moved into a new home. It was an upgrade and we could not be happier. With a new home comes the fun of decorating, making it “yours” with your style, a fresh start…but first. A new home comes with the need to CLEAN. I did a lot of cleaning. Including the Air ducts. It is something that I have not done as often as I should, but ALWAYS feel better when I do. And you really only need to get it done every few years (Every 2-5 years is recommended). BONUS! They even offer an air filter with a LIFETIME WARRANTY for around $70. That’s around the cost of 6 months of filters!

Professional duct cleaning uses specialized blowers, vacuums (pictured above), and brushes to clean out the supply, intake and return ducts throughout your home. This is the air that my littles are breathing- I want to be sure it’s not polluted with dust, etc. And if you have pets, kids with asthma or have done any home renovation or remodeling projects (BINGO!) you need to have someone come in and clean those ducts! You need to call All Clean.

Some tips & facts from THIS Mama and All Clean about getting your air ducts and vents cleaned.

  • Get your ducts cleaned every 2-5 years.
  • Invest in a good air filter. I’m dorkily excited about my new lifetime warranty filter. I just need to spray it off each month.
  • Research the company! Some companies will do a bait & switch. You will pay WAY more than you originally thought and not get as good of a job done.
  • There are lots of add ons – Decide what is worth it to you. I paid extra for disinfectant in each vent and the lifetime warranty air filter. The others sounded good, but just weren’t for me this time around. (Some others offered: Air conditioner coils cleaned, UV light inserted to clean air in vents, dryer vent cleaning.)

All Clean was fantastic. They are very professional and even did not mind my kids, okay me.. asking a hundred questions about what they were doing during the process and why it was necessary. It not only gave me peace of mind moving in with my air ducts clean, but I am now able to wait another few years before calling on them again. But you shouldn’t wait. You should give them a call. Cause let’s be honest, how many of you remember the last time your air ducts were professionally cleaned…have they ever? Pick up that phone and breathe easy! All Clean has got you covered.

VASA Fitness: Get healthy. Get happy.

Vasa

Gotta love summer. Sun, shorts, the pool…wait. I did say the pool right? Which would imply that I need to be in a swimming suit? Hmm. Time to shed that extra winter weight. Time to get in to VASA!

Confession time. The sad thing is, spring and early summer are usually the times when I really start to think about my fitness goals and how I have slacked on them. Fitness should not be just to look good in a swimsuit (although that helps!). It should be about taking care of my body and striving to be HEALTHY and have fun doing it! This is one of the reasons I LOVE Vasa– it’s stated right in their mission!

  • MISSION

“To UPLIFT everyone through fun, happy fitness.”

  • CORE PURPOSE

“We exist to help people find happiness through health and fitness.”

  • CORE VALUES

UPLIFT stands for Unity, Passion, Love, Integrity, Fun, and Trust

VASA FITNESS exists to inspire everyone to find happiness through health and fitness. The word VASA comes from Latin, meaning vessel. VASA FITNESS is your body, your victory, your gym. The mission is to UPLIFT everyone through fun, happy fitness.

This is not your typical gym. Vasa has something for everyone! Do you like to take group classes? Vasa has 100’s of them. Are you more of a one person work out type? Let one of Vasa’s personal trainers take care of you! Like to just do your own thing? Feel free! No one is going to bug you, in fact, you will feel the support of others as they strive to be healthy and be happy doing it. Let’s be honest. Going to the gym is NOT one of my favorite past times. But when I know I’m getting healthy? I am always happier.

VASA fits MY unique situation with options of a pool, spa, and daycare. They really take the excuse out of why I can’t hit the gym and get some endorphins going. I was very hesitant at first thinking I had to be in shape to go to the gym?! But it’s simply not true. Vasa and their employees love what they do. They will see the change in you as you get healthy. And you will to! So don’t wait for summer to end or deny yourself the pool! Get in. Get healthy. Get happy. You deserve it!

And don’t worry! My story doesn’t end here. I’m going to tell you more and more about my experience with Vasa in the coming months!

6 Tips to Help You Stick With Your “Diet” #JennyCraigKit

6 tips to stick with your diet

I have struggled with my weight for years. Between pregnancy, my love of food, and my loathing of exercise my body hasn’t fared well. But I know that needs to change. I’m not obese. I don’t think anyone would call me fat. But I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin. And that is the real problem. So what’s a girl to do? Well I’ve started eating better (yay!) and am kick starting my “diet” with Jenny Craig. The new Jenny Craig starter kit is exclusive to Walmart in participating stores and can be found in the diet/weight loss aisle.

What’s in the kit:

  • 5 day kit with a variety of 20 meals and snacks
  • One month free consultation at any Jenny Craig center or Jenny Craig Anywhere
  • Special $50 food savings when you join a Jenny Craig center

6 tips to stick with your “diet”

Hopefully these tips will help you (and me) on our healthy living journey.

  1. Get moving: This part is huge! And it doesn’t mean you need to start working out for 3 hours at the gym every day. Just increase your movement from whatever it is now. Maybe that means walking for 20 minutes. Whatever you can do, do it!
  2. Drink lots of water: I’ll admit, this is not my strong suit. But our bodies NEED water. Plus, there are no calories or sugar involved. So drinking more water is going to help almost right away.
  3. Set realistic goals: This one can be hard. We all want a magic pill that will help us lose 10 pounds overnight, but sadly that just doesn’t exist. If you set realistic goals (i.e. 1 to 2 pounds a week) you won’t get discouraged as easily. Also, you can’t just change the way you eat overnight. Give yourself some leeway. A cheat day or whatever it is you need to start eating better.
  4. Find a support group: This could mean you start talking to a consultant at Jenny Craig or even just making sure friends and family know what you are doing. Having that support when you are tempted to eat that second doughnut or are feeling discouraged about your progress can make the difference between quitting and pushing through your hurdle.
  5. Be nice to yourself: Honestly, this is probably the most important tip I can give. We all mess up. We make mistakes and we slip up on what we eat or do. Don’t beat yourself up when this happens! Stay positive! Know that you are human and tell yourself you made a mistake, but will do better tomorrow. This is the only way you will keep going on your journey. One slip up does NOT ruin the day. Or the diet. Or the week. Or you. YOU are amazing and are working on making yourself better. Focus on that.
  6. Jazz up your food the healthy way: This. This is another big one! If you don’t like the food you are eating, then why are you eating it? So focus on the low calorie options that still tickle your taste buds. If you are using pre-packaged foods (like Jenny Craig) that doesn’t mean you can’t add a little something to them to increase their appeal.

So how did I modify my Jenny Craig meals? Let me give you an example of just how easy and simple it can be! One of the meals included in my kit was Zesty Tortellini Soup. It was okay by itself, but I like a little more pizazz in my meals. So I added a bit of low fat mozzarella cheese (mmmm cheese), a sprinkle of basil, and a side of fresh veggies. Voila!

  • Jenny Craig Tortellini soup
  • low fat mozzarella cheese
  • basil
  • fresh fruits and veggies

Or, if you are looking for something sweet without going crazy on the calories, then here is an awesome recipe!

This is such an easy and beautiful dessert. It takes longer to wash and dry the berries and get them ready than anything else. It’s elegant and looks like it took a great deal of time. Use whatever fruit you have. Try to have a variety of colors for a better presentation.

berry-trifle-225x300

Ingredients:
4 cups cold fat-free milk
2 packages sugar-free, fat-free instant vanilla pudding mix (or cheesecake or white chocolate pudding mix)
1 carton (12 ounces) frozen reduced-fat whipped topping, thawed, divided (or sugar free)
1 prepared angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes (When I’m near Walmart I buy one of the sugar free angel food cakes.)
1 pint blackberries
1 pint raspberries
1 quart strawberries, sliced or quartered
Other fruit as desired (I like mango, kiwi, and bananas)
Directions:
In a medium bowl, whisk the milk and pudding mix for 2 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes or until soft-set. Mix in 2 cups of the thawed whipped topping. Set aside.
Place a third of the cake cubes in a trifle bowl. Top with a third of the pudding mixture and a third of the berries. Repeat layers twice. Top with remaining whipped topping. Garnish with quartered strawberries, if desired.
Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 24 hours.
Yield: 12 servings.

I’ve used canned mandarin oranges, peaches, pears, or whatever I have.
I put raspberries on one layer, blackberries on a separate layer, and strawberries on another layer. But layer however you wish.
One twelfth of this is about 200 calories, less if you use sugar free angel food cake.

I was provided a free Jenny Craig Weight Loss Starter Kit. However, the opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Five Ways to Tackle Cold & Flu Season

Posted by on Nov 22, 2015

Tackle cold and flu season

It’s that time of year again. Time for falling snow, frosty mornings, snowmen, sledding, and colds. Those coughs and sniffles can make you want to hide under the covers in your nice, warm bed. Or, you can tackle them head on. Here are my top tips to help you through this season of sniffles and chills.

  1. Be prepared! Make sure you have the supplies you need to battle germs. Stock up on medicines like pain relievers or decongestants. Don’t forget tissues, soap, hand sanitizer, and all the right tools. I love this complete kit from Safety 1st. Or, if you don’t want to buy the whole kit you can opt for this Set & Measure Spoon instead. safety 1st kit
  2. Drink Extra Fluids! Drinking more will help thin mucus, drain your sinuses, and relieve a stuffy nose. Water, broth, and sports drinks are good choices. If your kids don’t want to drink, popsicles are a great option.
  3. Wash Your Hands! Germy hands spread colds and flu. Tell your family to scrub their hands well with soap for 20 seconds. Tell kids to wash for as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. I have to tell my kids to sing it slowly or they can manage both songs in 5 seconds.
  4. Get Your Rest! Whether you’re trying to recover from a cold or flu, or trying to avoid it, get plenty of sleep.
  5. Use Steam! Hold your face over a just-boiled pot to clear nasal congestion. If the steam burns your nose, let it cool or breathe more slowly. Using a humidifier or hanging out in a steamy shower can help. I love this Ultrasonic Humidifier and it’s only $25 on Amazon.

humidifierI’m sure you have even more tips! I would love to hear them in the comments below. You can never be too prepared.

Get Peace of Mind Faster With AmWell + Get Your First Visit FREE!

Posted by on Nov 20, 2015

Amwell_3DevicesThis post in sponsored by Amwell. The doctor visit is real and my opinions are real.

I still remember watching Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman with my Mom back in the day. It may have been a bit of “I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR” mentality which led us to loving the show so much, but really? This lady was a walking hospital! Dr. Quinn had to literally go to the people in order to help treat them. Whether it was a common cold, or something much more serious…which were always our favorite episodes since it usually involved Dr. Quinn’s love interest, Sully…Sigh….

However fast forward..er..a few years and we have something MUCH more convenient, and it utilizes the modern technology we have in our day and age. We have Amwell!! Amwell makes it easy for you to talk to doctors, immediately, from your home. Don’t have a computer? Use your i-pad. Don’t have an i-pad? Use your i-phone. Don’t have an i-phone? Call from your home phone! See where I’m going with this? Simply log on to a computer from the convenience of your own home, or call 1-844-SEE-DOCS (1-844-733-3627) to connect with board-certified doctors in your area. These physicians are the REAL DEAL

Here are some reasons to use Amwell.

  1. Lower cost. Consumers expect online visits to be cost-savers; with in-office visits costing $82 for first-time patients according to the Healthcare Blue Book, Amwell offers a $49 physician visit – a savings of $33. Great option for students in college looking for cost-effective healthcare or those between jobs and without insurance.
  2. Accessibility. After hours, on weekends and in the middle of the night (24/7/365) availability. Great for those who do have transportation or when you don’t feel well enough to drive and those who are newly relocated and don’t have providers yet.
  3. Convenience. Consumers are looking for a faster appointment. Now they don’t need to schedule an appointment nor do they need to wait to be seen, especially if on vacation or business travel. The doctor can be seen from the comfort and convenience of their own home.
  4. Quick prescriptions. Consumers would rather have an online video visit than an in-office visit on average, this is a way to obtain common primary care prescriptions.
  5. Peace of mind. Rather than self-diagnosing or visiting a social forum for medical advice, users can obtain second opinions directly from board certified, licensed doctors.

Amwell_KidInBed

So I decided to try this out for myself and the timing could not have been better. I was at work when I received the dreaded call from my daughter’s school. “Your child is sick and is requesting to be picked up.” So off I went to get her. Blood shot eyes, fever and she complained of a tremendous headache which was making her see double…hmmm. Not good. So I got on the phone and called Amwell. Immediate response. Immediate drop in my blood pressure from the anxiety that follows your child being sick.

I initially tried the online version, but my computer I was on did not have the camera capabilities. I was a bit disappointed, thinking I would not get my session. WRONG! Just give them a call. They make it so accessible for any type of technology- and it worked like a charm. Because I did not need a prescription, the Doctor I spoke with even gave me a call and left a msg to make sure that I was followed up with. That is some GREAT customer service right there!

After filling out my medical history, which I must say is the best way I have seen! You just glance and click only on those ailments that pertain to you. Click. Click. Click. And you are done!

Amwell doc

I got on the line with Angela Long, a Primary Care Physician and I immediately felt at ease. I was able to get my questions answered, and she assured me that I was doing the right thing by giving my daughter Tylenol and making sure she was getting plenty of rest. I also was given the idea of perhaps getting her eyes looked at- perhaps asking her school the results of her last eye test? Maybe it’s time she had some glasses? I never thought of that!
